NEW ORLEANS, La. - May 17, 2011 - This is the first season for Outdoor Track and Field All-Region honors by the USTFCCCA (United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association), and the Clayton State Lakers placed eight athletes on this year's inaugural All-Southeast Region squad.
Selected for the Laker men were Charles Anderson, Ayrton Azcue, Chuks Chinukwue, Ricky Fort, Fidelis Mutiso, Shelby Russell and Edlin Veras. Representing the Clayton State women was Kayla Mobley.
"There are few opportunities in track & field to be recognized and this new All-Region award adds purpose to the season," said Clayton State head coach Mike Mead. "This is a nice honor for our bunch that had a solid outdoor season. All of our kids who earned the award are well deserving of it."
Three Laker athletes earned All-Region honors in multiple events.
For the men, Veras and Anderson each earned All-Region honors in two events. Veras, a sophomore from Hollywood, Fla., garnered honors in both the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay, while Anderson, a freshman from Pittsburgh, Penn., was honored in the 800-meter run and the 400-meter relay. Azcue, a sophomore from Zizur Mayor, Spain, garnered All-Region honors in 800-meter run, while Chinukwue, a senior from Barnesville, Ga., took home All-Region honors in the 110-meter hurdles.
Fort, a junior from Davisboro, Ga., earned All-Region honors in the 4x400-meter relay, and Mutiso, a senior from Eldoret, Kenya, was selected for the 5,000-meter run. Finally, Russell, a junior from Oklahoma City, Okla., was selected All-Region in the 4x400-meter relay.
Mobley, a junior from Plantation, Fla., was also a multi-event All-Region selection. She garnered honors in both the shut put and the discus. Three times this outdoor season, Mobley set the Clayton State women's track and field record for shot put. In addition, she also plays center for the NCAA Division II National Champion Clayton State women's basketball team.
